Servant Spotlight

October 28th 2008

With all the activity at Harvest Christian Fellowship, it’s easy to overlook some of the amazing ministry that takes place right under our noses. We hope, in the next few months to share some of the stories of ministry and give you the opportunity to pray about getting involved yourself, that you might grow and bear fruit in the body of Christ.

In our second installment of “Servant Spotlight”, we talked to Valerie Stufkosky who is involved with a puppet ministry and uses her gift to reach out to children in our community with the love of Jesus Christ.

Valerie has been attending Harvest for 17 years. She started working with puppets on Sunday mornings in the Childrens’ Ministry. She had intended on being a teacher’s aid on Sunday mornings but found the only thing available that day was doing a puppet show for the three-year olds. She had never worked with puppets before but felt the Lord was directing her there and showed her you don’t need experience, just willing hands to serve Him.

For the past year and a half she’s been doing puppet shows at our Mexico Missions outreaches in the park as well as orphanages across the border. Recently she performed her puppet show at Cosecha’s (Harvest Spanish) Church here in Riverside. Cosecha has invited Valerie to start a puppet ministry at the church during their Sunday morning services. She’s also hoping to be able to venture into the local children’s hospitals and convalescent homes in the future.

Her greatest joy is to bring a smile to children’s faces as they sing and follow along with the skits, understanding that Jesus loves them. Valerie shared that it never gets old seeing children come to faith in Jesus Christ by watching the shows.

Like so many other ministries, Valerie faces the challenge of having enough volunteers. So if you’re looking for the opportunity to get involved, if you love kids, and want to make a difference in the lives of children, ask about joining the puppet ministry. They’re always looking for fresh ideas for their upcoming productions. Valerie says, “All you need are willing hands and a servants heart and the Lord will do the rest!”

The Power of a Simple Gift

October 15th 2008

Each year, Harvest Christian Fellowship participates in Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse. What a blessing it is to put together a shoebox for a child who might otherwise never receive anything for Christmas.

Samaritans’ Purse will distribute more than seven million boxes to children in 100 countries this year. It’s a wonderful family project! Be a part of this great ministry and pick up your boxes this Sunday morning on the patio while they last. Limit two boxes per family.

Harvest Men’s Softball is in Full Swing

October 14th 2008

Harvest is a big church and one of the many ways to make a big church small is to become involved in a ministry.  One such ministry is the sports ministry.  The objective of the sports ministry is “To bring honor and glory to God by providing men, women, and children with an opportunity to experience Christian fellowship, personal discipleship, and spiritual growth through participation in athletics.”

The sports ministry is an opportunity to meet other believers from Harvest that you may not get the chance to know during a Sunday morning or mid-week service.  Many life-long friendships have begun on the playing field or court.

Players complete a weekly Bible study on their own and then each team meets before their game to review their study.  Players have the opportunity to share what the Lord spoke to them during their study with their teammates.  It’s also an opportunity to pray with and for others.  The actual competition in the sporting event is like icing on the cake.

Currently, the men are in the midst of their fall softball season.  The league consists of 10 teams comprised of men that attend Harvest.  Recently, the men held a family night in which family, friends and visitors were invited to fellowship, pray, watch some softball and eat.

Friends, family and visitors are welcome to come anytime.  The men play on Saturday evenings at Reid Park in Riverside. Check it out and cheer on your fellow believers.  You’ll probably see some familiar faces and you just might make some good friends in the process.
